ABHYANGA
(Ayurvedic Body Massage)

massage is given to help expel toxins from the body
as quickly as possible. This is a body massage with
medicated oils to balance specific conditions. The oil
used contains herbs and ingredients that pacify the
unbalanced vata, pitta, and kapha energies.
STEAM BATH
This treatment is highly recommended
after oil massage to maximise the benefits. All tissue
of the body which are obstracted by the disease causing
factor gets opened by action of steam enabling the impurities
to flushed out. Thus their elimination from the body
becomes easier. It also moisturises and rehydrates the
skin making it soft n smooth to enhance the benefit
of massage.
Pizhichil
The patient is made to lie on a wooden Droni (a specially
designed wooden plank). Then pieces of linen dipped
in comfortably warm medicated oil are squeezed over
the patient’s body from a specific height. When
the warm oil flows and spreads over the body, therapist
gives the patient a gentle massage. This is effective
in diseases connected with the Vata Dosha and its allied
manifestations like spondylosis, hemiplegia, Arthritis,
back pain, muscular dystrophy etc.. This is done only
on the body below the neck and the duration can be fixed
from forty to forty-five minutes depending upon the
strength of the patient.
Shirodhara
The patient is advised to lie on a special wooden droni
with his neck and head comfortably placed. Then a non-stop
continuous stream of the prescribed liquid medicine
is gently poured on his forehead from a prescribed height
through a specially devised apparatus called Dhara Chatti
for a period of forty-five minutes to an hour.
Dhara
Dhara is occasionally administered on
whole body in special cases. Dhara is considered to
be effective for several diseases like stress related
disorders, sleeplessness and many degenerated brain
disorders. Different liquid mediums are used in Dhara
for different diseases. Medicated oils, milk, tender
coconut water and decoctions of herb extracts are some
of the fluids used
Navarakizhi
Medicated oil is first applied liberally
over the patient’s body. Then the body is massaged
with small linen bags filled with cooked Navara rice.
The rice is cooked by boiling it in cow’s milk
along with suitable liquid herb mixture. The linen bags
filled with rice are dipped in the same mixture kept
boiling over a gentle flame and applied by masseurs
at a comfortable temperature over the whole body of
the patient.
Navarakizhi is a special massage, which rejuvenates
the body. It is very effective in degenerative muscle

Marma Abhyanga

This is an energising massage of the marma points (specific
energy centres) that stimulates the circulatory, immune
and nervous systems. This revitalising massage also
helps to restore energy. To achieve best results this
treatment should be performed once a month.
Sports Massage
Massage, applied skilfully, is the most effective therapy
for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to
the musculo-skeletal system. Received regularly this
may help athletes prevent injuries, which might otherwise
be caused by overuse. A constant build up of tension
in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses
on joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles
themselves.
These muscle imbalances may develop and often go undiagnosed
until they are serious enough to cause the athlete discomfort
or impede performance. The skilled massage therapist
will be able to detect variations in the soft tissues
and by using the correct techniques, help the sports
person maintain a much healthier physical state.
It may therefore be reasonably claimed that one of the
greatest benefits of sports massage is in helping prevent
injury. |
