If we go bit in to the subject I think Ayurveda explains this syndrome better than any modern textbooks.

The patient suffering from Grahani always have difficulty in digestion either heaviness, pain or acidity - depending upon the involved dosha .
Some time patients also complain of excessive thirst and appetite, dryness in throat, dryness of skin and of sound in the ears {tinnitus} and diminished vision.
He explains the pain in the cardiac region and lateral side of abdomen, pain in tongue, no taste, irritating / cutting sort of pain in anal region.
As patients lack taste of foods, they want to eat the foods of all taste.
There is always an association of psychological imbalance.
Most of the time patients also complain of heaviness in the abdomen during taking meal and after meal.
Due to agnimandhya- mucus start coming with stool along with episode of diarrhoea and constipation- hard piece of stool
Very typical symptoms Backache.

Type of Grahni :

• Vatta
• Pitta
• Kapha
• Sannipatik
Pathogenesis (Samprapti):

Vatta Grahani:
Excessive consumption of pungent, bitter and astringent rasa dominant foods,
Excessive intake of unctuous and cold food, fasting, suppression of natural urges, excessive sexual intercourse
Vata accumulates and becomes aggravated in Purishavaha srota (Colon)
And overflows to rasa and rakta dhatus. It then relocates to small intestines where it vitiates samana vayu and apana vayu

suppresses the jatharagni (digestive fire)
Leads to acidity and roughness in body, dryness of throat and mouth, abnormal sounds in the ears, frequent pains in cardiac region, distaste in mouth, sawing pain in abdomen, backache, mental frustration, flatulance after and during process of digestion, difficulty in defaecation, passage of stool which is liquid mixed with hard stool (pseudo-diarrhoes with faecolith formation) and is associated with mucus (ama) and froth.
If vata relocates into mamsa dhatuu of mahavaha srota, cramping is present.
If continued vata vitiated due to irregular habits as above, samana vayu iv vitiated in manovaha srota, the mind then becomes unstable and the patint may experience anxiety due to prana vayu vitiation and worry due to vyana vayu vitiation

Pitta Grahni:
Excessive intake of pungent, heavy (ajirna), vidahi (which cause burning sensation), sour and alkaline foods
Aggravation of pitta
Suppression and extinguished agni (digestive enzymes) as
Hot water causes extinction of physical fire
Patient voids loose stool containing undigested material which is
Bluish-yellow or yellow in colour. Patient suffers from eructation with foul smell
and sour taste, burning sensation in cardiac region and throat, anorexia
as well as morbid thirst.
Kapha Grahni:
Consumption of excessive oleated, heavy, cold foods,
Intake of excessive quantity of foof and sleeping soon after meals
Vitiation of kapha
Jatharagni mandya
(slowness of digestive fire)
heaviness in abdomen, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, stickiness and
sweet taste in mouth, cough, spitting (excessive salivation)
and pinasa (chronic rhinitis), eructation with foul smell and sweet taste
voiding of stool which is split into pieces, mixed with mucus and
heavy phlegm and heavy. Even if not emaciated,
patient feels weak and indolent.

Sannipatika Grahni:
There is simultaneous manifestation of all the sign and symptoms pertaining to the three dosas as explained above.
